Weather Vain mounting "This was all fields when I was a lad" Say hello Gary and Andy..."Hello"
Which way is the wind blowing?

During some essential maintenance being carried out on Pontefract Town Hall, it was noticed that the weather vain on top of the Hall had a “odd” lean and wasn’t working properly.

Upon further inspection it appeared that the spindle which holds the Weather vain in place was broken. It was apparent that someone had attempted to repair the problem previously.

Unfortunately the botched repair job had just made matters worse and the spindle would need replacing.

Gary Shaw Commercial Officer for Wakefield Council said ;

“A company had previously fixed the weather vain before and well, I needed to get in a firm that could really do the job.

In my opinion there is no other company that can match Brailsford's expertise and professionalism, and you can quote me on that.”

Thanks Gary, we have.

Cranes UK - one the largest crane distributer in the UK just recently asked us to solve a little storage problem they had.

When the cranes are on soft ground they use Large foot plates, so the feet dont sink into the
ground. The problem is where to store them when theyre not in use

As each crane is different, each of the storage boxes need to be individually made to measure
Made from 6mm Galvanised steel box section these boxes are built fit for there heavy duty purpose
An Aluminium chequer plate facia is fitted to match with the cranes existing design, to avoid the boxes looking like a bolt on extra.

Made entirely from Stainless Steel this sink unit really has the unique factor.

The project was for three units, with each unit being a different size and shape but on a similar scale to this one.

As with all our stainless work the finish on the units has to be excellent so as you can imagine weve gone through some polishing pads with this one.

All three units have now been delivered to Devon!
(Maybe they will be using them to make custard on)

Filtration Unit –
The Perfect Fit

Its nice when you get something a little bit different to fabricate. We like to coin a phase “if you can draw it we can make it.”
But what if there isn’t any drawings? ...and it has to be an exact match. That’s what happened with this project. We were asked to build this filtration unit for a local swimming baths to replace the existing unit which was leaking. But there were no drawings and the existing faulty unit was made from fibre glass. We had to take measurements from this unit and make the necessary adjustments in order to create the replacement Filtration Unit from Stainless Steel. The unit is now installed and working perfectly, the other one should be easier to do - Did I mention there was two.

Quality Stainless Finish
to Luna Club

November 2008 we were asked by the owners of the new bar "Luna" in Mexborough to design, manufacture and install a range of stainless steel fitting. These included the glass racking behind the bar, drink shelves throughout the club and the urinals, sinks and cistern. All items were manufactured from Stainless Steel and were finished with a high polished surface and invisible joints.

All work was completed within budget and working alongside other tradesmen were completed, ready for the opening of the bar before Christmas.

Pillar Shrouds

In August 2008 we were contacted by Eric Spivey of Wakefield Metropolitan District Council to offer our advice on enclosing some concrete pillars with Mild Steel Shrouds.  We arranged a site visit with Eric and a Consultant from N.P.S. Consultants with regards to the most satisfactory way to Manufacture and Install the Shrouds.  We all agreed that the Shrouds should be manufactured in one large Flanged Section at the base of each column, and two intermediate Flanged Sections above these for easier Installation.  N.P.S. would supply Manufacturing Drawings with all relevant measurements completed on site by ourselves.

The Shrouds were approximately 1 metre Dia split into two halves, rolled from 10mm Mild Steel with a Top and Bottom Flange from 50 x 10 Mild Steel and Side Flanges manufactured from 100 x 10 Flat Bar and bolted together with 20 x 100 Mild Steel Dia. Bolts the Bottom 2 weld weighted approximately 80 kilos each.  All Flanges were strengthen with 10mm stiffeners at relevant points.  The Top Two Sections were Manufactured the same but weighted approximately 40 kilos each.  The following pictures show various stages in the Installation Process.  All work was completed by the 1st October 2008.

In February of this year we purchased a press brake, over the last couple of years we have looked at various press brakes but circumstances always worked against us when deciding to buy.  However the old Edwards press brake was beginning to struggle, the machine was purchased in 1972 and has seen a lot of hard work.  Although still folding, it would not fold to its capacity and would only fold certain items correct.  Also the two large hydraulic rams that were the main stay of the machine were leaking.  We went to Carters in January of 2008 to see a similar machine working and were very impressed.  Where as everything on the old machine was manual the new machine was a 5 Axis C.N.C. this meant everything was automatic.  You can programme all your measurements, Thickness of material and profiles into the machines C N C system which consists of 3 parts: the colour touch screen, the PLC control system and the frequency change system.  They operate the back gauge motor drive and the top punch drive to a calculated position.  The C N C system is conversational and any job requirements you have can be programmed.  You can select different operational modes to quickly and accurately complete the presswork.  You just need to input data and proceed with the job.  All the data inputted is then saved for repeat jobs.  We realised the machine would not only speed up productions on repeat jobs but increase the kind of projects we could take on due to the large diversity of the tasks the machine can complete.  For example folding 0.9 Aluminium up to 6m Mild Steel pressings.

In February 2007 we received a call from Wakefield Council regarding their damaged Hammer Cage. The doors were extensively damaged and there was also some damage to 2 side panels. Back at the workshop all the sections were manufactured. The side frames also needed to be braced as movement from the doors had caused them to distend. All sections were assembled on our premises before Galvanizing. On site for health and safety procedures to be followed fixed scaffolding was erected inside and outside of the cage so assembly of the frames and doors could be carried out safely. The side frames were installed and then the bracings followed, these were bolted to the side frames then concreted into the Ground.

Our original disabled steps were extremely heavy and awkward to manoeuvre in and out of the pool this action took at least two people to carry out. Management were concerned that if one member of staff were to try and lift the steps from the pool then they could injure themselves.

Management contacted Andy at Brailsford who designed the disabled steps and made them so light that now one member of staff is able to lift the steps in and out the water without risk of injury.

We were first approached in April 2006 to undertake some work in the Tempo Bar.  We had previously done work for Ally who also owns the Pulse Bar in Barnsley.  They wanted a Stainless Steel Barrier around the stage area to stop people gaining access on to it.  This was manufactured from 50mm Stainless Steel tube with tubular infils.  This work was complete for Xmas 2006.  After which we began to build up a good working relationship with them.  Some jobs only being small jobs like repairing Chairs and bar tables to larger jobs like manufacturing and Installing Stainless Steel handrails.  At Xmas 2007 we replaced a glass section around the speaker area with Stainless Steel perforated mesh so not to restrict the music.  At this moment in time we are manufacturing and Installing a Stainless Steel handrail system and shelf system around the D.J. area downstairs.  We have also completed work for Ally’s Cousin in the Base Bar.

In January 2007 we were asked by Wakefield MDC to go and inspect some damaged fencing at Lupset Golf Course.  The fencing had been badly damaged by heavy gales. The main angle supports were rusted through and basically the fencing was just leant up against the trees.  We relayed our findings back to Wakefield MDC and it was agreed the fencing would be dismantled.  It took a day to take down the fencing.  The mesh was removed first, then the angle supports and brackets.  A new fence would be erected but not as high as the existing fence.  The fence would be manufactured from 40 x 40 x 3 R.H.S.  The mesh frame was manufactured from 25 x 25 x 3 angle in sections for easier handling with 25 x 25 x 10g mesh panels.  The main frame would also be braced back with supports concreted into the floor to add support.  The fencing was manufactured, then erected in our yard prior to Galvanizing.  When Galvanized the fencing took a couple of days to install.  The fencing was erected to protect the public using a public footpath at the rear.

In December 2001 we were approached by John Whitworth to undertake some work on the Thomas Whitworth Forum Building.  These were some derelict buildings and yard at the rear of what used to be Butterfields Drapery Store.  The building and yard would be refurbished to include upmarket shops and a three floor Lucorum public house and restaurant.  We were asked to manufacture a Stainless Steel bar top to go over the existing wooden bar.  The centrepiece of the restaurant was to be a Python like supply pipe from the rear of the Bar to a free standing service point at the front of the bar.  We would also manufacture and install a Stainless Steel workstation at the rear of the bar.  John insisted that the bar top should be made all in one with no on site welding. Little did anyone realise that the bar top would not go up the Stairs in one Section.  After realising the Bar would not go upstairs we had two options either cut the bar and re-weld it on site, or take the bar up through a window which overlooked the courtyard.  To do this we had to take off the window guard, fit a hoist to a girder that ran parallel across the Yard, erect scaffolding to support us as we hoisted up the bar.  Once up to the height of the window the bar was swung into the restaurant area.  Job well done!  We also manufactured some Stainless Steel urinals for the pub area of the building.  It is now 2008, the Thomas Whitworth Forum has new owners but has got a reputation as one of Barnsley Top entertainment and shopping areas.
