Listed Building Project
January 2012

We were contact by a local builder who was carrying out a major refurbishment on a part listed building in Barnsley.  The works which included removing two large brick supporting columns in the kitchen area: to carry this work out he required four large U–beams to carry the weight of the roof.  Our surveyor carried out a site visit to allow him to calculate the size of beams needed and the cleating arrangement required to splice the beams together.  Three of the beams would be 254 x 254 by 74 and the larger beam would be 254 x 254 x 89 approximately five metres long.  One beam would be installed first running parallel down the kitchen and supported on two large pillars.  The larger beam would then sit parallel with the first beam on the stone pillars.  Then running at 90 degrees across the building to replace and give support where the stone pillars were, are two more beams again parallel with each other and spliced into the larger beam, to get these beams in two original large oak beams are to be cut.  Once the steel beams were in place fabricated steel shoes were welded in position and bolted to support the oak beams, and all the beams were welded together.  Once all the required cladding was complete these fabricated shoes would be covered in copper sheet.  All these beams were positioned by the builder without the use of any heavy duty cranes.

Total weight of small beam = 370 kg
Total weight of large beam = 445 kg

Featherstone Memorial
Wakefield MDC

We were contacted by Dave Atkinson from Wakefield MDC in July of this year.
They have a memorial in the centre of Featherstone that required refurbishing.  The memorial was a dowty pit support that had been erected to commemorate an incident where two young men were killed (see inscription).
The cast iron outer shell had cracked and due to the severe winter the crack had opened up and spread right up to the top of the column on one side making to unstable.
Dave had tried to get a replacement but could not locate one anywhere.  It was decided to plate the column in two sections and to fabricate a collar to match one that was still there.  We don’t know where the other collar went or how it was taken off but as you can see by the photos i don’t think we did a bad job!

Pugneys Water Park

When Eric Spivey from Wakefield MDC contacted us to discuss a problem the had at Pugneys water Park, we never expected to actually be working in it.
Site Manager Steve explained that the ramp used to launch canoes and windsurfers had disintegrated which meant as the trailers backed down the ramp they got stranded.

The solution (Eric’s idea) was to line the ramp with 6mm stell plates with 30 deg bends at the bottom to allow the sheets to wedge into the floor of the lake. Sounds simple enough.

Due to the size of the area there was no option but to weld the sections on site before they could be moved into position after shot blasting and coating with an anti-slip treatment.

Once in position they were resin bolted onto place and the concrete made good.
Now, how we got those sheets into position remains our little secret, safe to say – it was Erics Idea
Barnsley Town Hall

We’re doing our bit for
Barnsley Town Hall

We’ve been called in 3 times during the recent refurbish work on Barnsley Town Hall for various projects. From Heavy duty brackets to secure security fencing around the site through to galvanized steel retaining straps. The third project was to test our endurance. It required some heavy duty RSJ’s which we cut welded galvanised. Once on site we found out there destination… Top Floor!
There’s the stairs lads.

Lifting Solutions

We were contacted by Kevin Greasley in May of this year. Kevin is the Production Manager for Lifting Solutions. Lifting Solutions provide lifting equipment to the steel industry these include cranes, jibs and hoists. They have their own Fabrication Department that manufactures mild steel fabrications including walkways, gantrys and overhead crane structures. Kevin had a project which involved modifying a stainless steel yoke, and manufacturing a heavy duty stainless steel 316 support frame. They had only a short period of time to complete the project and he wanted to know if we were interested in helping them out. The work would involve modifying the yoke , manufacturing R.H.S. 316 Stainless Steel support frames and various laser cut and machined parts. These were completed by the middle of June. Kevin said they were really pleased with the work and the swift turnaround and both parties hoped this would lead to a long standing working relationship.

Play Time

In February, Sacred Heart School asked us if we could Design, build and install a Multi-Use play area. The play area needed to be used for basketball, football and general play.

We manufactured the Football Nets and fencing from heavy duty open flooring, which has two advantages; its strong and its safe. All items were galvanized before being powder coated in the colours of the schools choice.

“We were really pleased with the Play Area that the lads at Brailsford’s did. The children thought it was fantastic and even parents have commented on how good it looks. We saved money from our coffee mornings to fund the project. The school says it will now pay to fence the rest of the Play Area in, which will be fantastic"

Mrs Dickinson.

Looking for something similar? We can offer a wide choice of combinations of play areas from football nets with a fence through to completely fenced in play areas only.

A Giant Leap for Dog Kind

Tricky one this, no plans, no drawings, and with the safety of animals at stake absolute pin point accuracy.

Working with Professional dog trainer Kevin Hodson we assisted with his design and then fabricated this full set of dog hurdles which are now in full use at the Owlerton Stadium in Sheffield.

“There was no second guessing with this job as any mistakes could have had injured or even killed a racing greyhound, the guys at Brailsford Bros have done an exceptional job. All the trainers and staff have commented on how good the hurdles perform and everyone is highly delighted”

The Bridge over the River Kwai

Well actually it’s a bridge over a stream in Doncaster, but hey we’ve got to start somewhere.

The bridge is to continue a footpath / bridleway through a new housing development by Bell way Homes and has been built to hold not just the heaviest pedestrian traffic, but horses too.

We built the bridge in our workshop before transporting it to its final destination.

Going Down Under

Following rigorous testing and development, the Drain Liner range (pictured) has undergone a series of modifications and improvements since we made the first baby drain liner and it’s been quite a journey too.
But that’s nothing compared to its next journey.
The Drain Liner has proved to be so successful that we now fabricate 3 sizes, we’ve powder coated them and they’re being exported to Australia.

“We’re really pleased to be part of this exciting project, it’s not your run of the mill job and at times it has taken quite a bit of head scratching, but by working beyond the call we‘ve got there.  We are very proud that that our workmanship is now being used and exhibited globally”

We were contacted in September 2010 by Andy Watson of Byrom Clarke Roberts a firm of Architects from Leeds to see if we were interested in pricing for a job at Waterstones in Birmingham.  He forwarded some pictures but not very clear so we requested a site visit.  It was to refurbish a Fire Escape with a view to eventually replacing it. As you can see from the photo's it was quite high over 180 steps! I was informed the job was to be completed at the end of October.

No job too far - No job too high!!

Juliet would have loved this

Weighing in at over half a tonne each these balconies are the real deal. Fabricated in sectional pieces and hot galvanised dipped as well as being big, these balconies are built to last a lifetime and they look petty swish too.

In the photos you can see the two balconies in situ for our client Bellway Homes

Now on with the next 16...

So with so much room to wander about I dare say Juliet would approve and  I dare say Romeo would have been pretty chuffed too.

Pot House Hamlet Fencing

Set in the Heart of Silkstone Village everything about Pothouse Hamlet is well just lovely.
If you’ve ever been to the Pothouse Hamlet, you’ll know just how picturesque it is.

So when Tom Horsefield called us about some fencing, we knew this would need particular attention to detail.

This wasn’t by no means a straight forward job either,

The design of the fence had to match the original fence that had been build and fitted on site 20 years ago.

All the fencing had to be mounted and fixed onto original (irreplaceable) York stone flags and walls. (and you can imaging there wasn’t a straight edge in sight.)

Coupled with fighting off chickens, rain and working with minimal disturbance to customers. It’s no wonder 2 other companies decided it was too much for them.

Welcome to the Brailsford’s mindset. “If you can draw it, we can build it”

The whole project was erected on site then dismantled and constructed at our workshop, before being galvanised and re- constructed.

“Im over the moon with the project, start to finish Brailford’s have shown me a different league of engineering - Highly Delighted”

Ornamental Lampstandards

We were contacted in March of 2010 by Paul Derbyshire of Barnsley MBC Electrical Department. An ornamental lampstandard had been damaged by a lorry, to make it safe the top section of the standard had been removed. We were asked by Paul to manufacture an exact duplicate of the existing standard to replace the damaged one. The standard was manufactured from Bespoke material, galvanized, powder coated and re-installed.
